After years of construction: The first trams finally roll on the West Tangent

The first section of the West Tangent tram line in Munich, which has been under construction for two years, is officially opened with a maiden journey and a public celebration.

On Saturday, February 28, residents in the western part of Munich celebrated as the first section of the West Tangent tram line was inaugurated. This initial segment runs between Agnes-Bernauer-Straße and Ammerseestraße, marking a significant milestone in a project that has demanded patience and resilience from the local community over the course of two years of construction. The project is expected to greatly enhance public transport efficiency in the area, connecting several districts over a length of approximately 1.5 kilometers.

The West Tangent line is a crucial infrastructure initiative that aims to link the districts of Neuhausen-Nymphenburg, Laim, Hadern, Sendling-Westpark, and Thalkirchen-Obersendling-Forstenried-Fürstenried-Solln by the end of 2028. However, the project has not been without controversy; it has faced opposition since its planning phase over ten years ago, with protests and community groups forming in response to concerns about its impact on neighborhoods and the city’s transport dynamics.

Despite these challenges, the opening of the tram line represents a significant achievement for Munich's urban development and public transport planning. As residents look forward to improved transit options, the completion of the West Tangent not only embodies infrastructure progress but also highlights the ongoing dialogue between urban planning authorities and community stakeholders. The success of this project may set a precedent for future transit initiatives within the region.
