Genetics and Intellectual Property Protection: Key Issues Raised by a Seed Company to Boost Soybean Yields and Narrow the Production Gap

A seed company in Argentina has introduced new soybean varieties and highlighted the importance of genetics and intellectual property protection to improve agricultural yields.

The Argentine seed company, DONMARIO Semillas, held its traditional DONMARIO MÁS event at its experimental field in Chacabuco, Buenos Aires, where it showcased five new soybean varieties. The event attracted a significant number of producers, engineers, and advisors who gathered for over four hours to discuss the developed varieties and agronomical strategies aimed at boosting soybean yields.

During the presentation, representatives from DONMARIO emphasized strategies for narrowing the production gap, which currently stands at 32% between the average yields in the country and the maximum potential. This gap underlines the challenges faced by Argentine soybean producers and the opportunity for improvement through the use of genetically advanced seeds and suitable agronomic practices.

Additionally, the need for increased adoption of certified seeds and stronger intellectual property protection in biotechnological events was highlighted as fundamental steps toward enhancing Argentina's agricultural productivity. The discussions suggest that a focus on innovation and protection rights is crucial for the sustainable development of the soybean industry in Argentina, balancing productivity with the advancement of agricultural technology and genetic resources.
