National Armed Forces Test Remote Mining Systems

Latvia's National Armed Forces are testing remote mining systems to enhance their defense capabilities, allowing for the rapid creation of anti-tank minefields.

The National Armed Forces (NBS) of Latvia are currently testing remote mining systems which provide the operational ability to quickly and mobile set up anti-tank minefields. This tactical capability is expected to restrict and delay the movement of enemy armored vehicles, thereby strengthening Latvia's national defense. The development of such remote mining capabilities is being conducted incrementally, with plans to deliver the first systems later this year which will facilitate practical training for units and enable integration into operational plans.

This testing is carried out under a previously signed contract between Latvia's Ministry of Defense and the State Defense Logistics and Procurement Centre with the German company "Dynamit Nobel Defence GmbH." The contract encompasses not just the acquisition of the "Scorpion 2" systems, but also the procurement of associated munitions such as anti-tank mines and other related equipment necessary for their operation. This initiative represents a significant step in improving the military readiness and operational capabilities of Latvia's armed forces.

Moreover, to bolster supply security and enhance the sustainability of these systems in the long term, certain components are planned to be manufactured locally within Latvia. This local production strategy aims to ensure a reliable supply chain for the National Armed Forces and is crucial for maintaining operational effectiveness in a potentially changing security environment.
