In Madhya Pradesh, a significant controversy has arisen regarding the registration of Waqf properties, fueled by a recent report from the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG). The report highlights alarming findings, indicating that between 2018 and 2023, approximately ₹770 million worth of government land has been improperly registered as Waqf property across 20 districts. Of the 81 properties audited, 33 were identified as government-owned, including schools, police stations, and government land designated for other uses. This situation not only points to the negligence of local administrative bodies but also questions the operational practices of the Waqf board. The opposition party, Congress, has labeled the matter as one of conspiracy and corruption.
