Vocational School Leader: With Estonian Language Education, We Send a Message to Primary Schools as Well

Estonian vocational schools will only accept students under Estonian-language programs starting next school year, aiming to send a message to transitioning primary schools.

Starting next school year, vocational schools in Estonia will only accept students into Estonian-language programs. According to Ott Pärna, the director of the Tallinn Technology College, this decision is aimed to reinforce the importance of fully transitioning to Estonian education for primary schools currently undergoing changes. Currently, some vocational programs operate under a 60/40 principle, where the majority of teaching is in Estonian, but this is not sufficient for all students.

Pärna highlighted the challenges faced by the Lasnamäe Mechanical School, where out of approximately 850 students, only about 100 are capable of completing their education in Estonian under the current program setup. The shift to a fully Estonian-language curriculum reflects broader educational and societal goals to strengthen the use of the Estonian language in schools, particularly as students transition from primary to vocational education.

Moreover, with the implementation of a preparatory year, the aim is to support students who have gaps in their primary education and to prepare them for the next level of schooling. This initiative is anticipated to create three groups of students based on their language proficiency levels, enabling a more tailored educational approach that addresses the diverse needs of incoming students and helps bridge existing educational gaps in Estonia's school system.
