The language training at Ida-Viru vocational school takes students out of their comfort zones

Intensive Estonian language courses at Ida-Viru Vocational Education Center help students step out of their comfort zones, despite a minority not attending.

Intensive Estonian language courses at the Ida-Viru Vocational Education Center (IVKHK) have been designed to encourage students who lack the necessary language proficiency to engage more fully in their educational experience. While the initiative has faced some resistance, with about 20% of the participating students opting not to attend, the majority find the courses beneficial in pushing them beyond their comfort zones. Teachers recognize that these language courses play a crucial role in integrating students into the local community and facilitating their personal development.

The courses have been operational for three weeks, specifically targeting students who do not meet the requisite language standards. Feedback from the students indicates that while learning Estonian is challenging, they appreciate the necessity of mastering the language. One student, Ruslan Semin, expressed that the courses have significantly enhanced his knowledge, recognizing the importance of being able to speak the local language is critical for their future opportunities. Another student, Arsemi Chikin, admitted to struggling with the desire to skip classes but ultimately noted that he managed to overcome that temptation in favor of continued learning.

With 500 students having been referred to these intensive courses based on test results, it's evident that the school's initiative addresses a pressing need for language education among its student population. By pushing students to confront their fears and learn a new language, IVKHK aims to foster a more inclusive environment that encourages active participation in Estonian society. This program not only aims at enhancing language skills but also seeks to build confidence among students as they navigate their educational journey in a bilingual context.
