Prosecutorial investigation into sabotage of telecommunication cables on the Athens – Thessaloniki railway line

A formal investigation has been initiated regarding the cutting of telecommunication cables along the Athens-Thessaloniki railway line, impacting train operations.

A preliminary investigation has been ordered by the head of the Thessaloniki Appeals Prosecutor's Office, Leonidas Nikolopoulos, following complaints that unknown individuals cut telecommunication cables on the central railway line connecting Athens and Thessaloniki, near Platy Imathias. The prosecutor has instructed the local First Instance Prosecutor's Office to clarify whether any criminal acts of a felony nature have occurred, identify the perpetrators, and report on the results of the criminal investigation, according to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency.

In response to the incident, a spontaneous investigation by the police has also begun, with members of the Northern Greece Criminal Investigations Sub-Directorate dispatched to the location. On Wednesday afternoon, it was discovered that cables had been cut, resulting in damage to the signaling and telecommunication system, which has put the system on that segment of the line out of operation. The immediate detection of this disruption triggered both the investigation and heightened concerns regarding railway safety and security.

This incident raises serious implications not only for the operational integrity of the railway but also for public safety, as train services on one of Greece's busiest routes may be compromised. The act of sabotage highlights the potential for criminal elements to disrupt essential infrastructure, necessitating a thorough examination by law enforcement and judicial authorities to prevent future occurrences and ensure the safety of passengers and train operations.
