RJ is under a red alert from Inmet for flooding and forecast of storms until the end of the weekend

The state of Rio de Janeiro is experiencing a red alert for flooding and storm risks due to heavy rains, with significant rainfall expected in the coming days.

The entire state of Rio de Janeiro is currently under a red alert issued by Inmet due to the risk of flooding, inundations, river overflow, and landslides resulting from substantial rainfall since Tuesday (24). The weather forecast from Climatempo indicates that more storms are expected between this Thursday (26) and Saturday (28). As a consequence of the heavy rains this week, nearly 700 people have been displaced in São João de Meriti, located in the Baixada Fluminense region. The situation is critical, highlighting the vulnerability of urban areas to extreme weather conditions.

Climatempo predicts that the most significant rainfall accumulation will occur between Thursday and Friday, with estimates of 30mm and 50mm respectively in the capital, Rio de Janeiro. These forecasts come alongside a drop in temperatures, with highs of 31°C on Thursday, decreasing to 28°C on Friday. On Saturday, temperatures are expected to mirror Friday's but with a notable decrease in precipitation, providing a temporary respite from the torrential downpour, although the situation remains precarious.

Meteorologists warn that the accumulated rainfall in the state could exceed 100mm in a single day, which may exacerbate the already challenging conditions. As authorities monitor the situation closely, the impact of severe weather on communities raises concerns about infrastructure resilience and public safety. Immediate attention to response strategies for displaced residents and ongoing preparedness for potential future storms are paramount in mitigating the effects of such extreme weather events.
