Chubu Electric President Promises to 'Promptly Submit' Data on Fraud Following Regulatory Committee's Indication
Chubu Electric's president acknowledged the insufficient documentation during a press conference and pledged to provide necessary records regarding the fraudulent data concerning earthquake motion standards used for the Hamaoka nuclear power plant.
The president of Chubu Electric Power Company, Yoshinobu Hayashi, addressed concerns raised by the Nuclear Regulation Authority regarding the insufficient documentation related to the calculation of earthquake motion standards, referred to as 'design basis earthquake motion', for the Hamaoka nuclear power plant. In a press conference held on the 26th, Hayashi stated that he would promptly submit the required records, expressing his commitment to understanding what was lacking and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.
The regulatory committee indicated that the procedures involved in establishing the maximum expected seismic motion during an earthquake were under scrutiny, particularly suggesting that Chubu Electric utilized convenient data that may have led to an underestimation of seismic risks. Reports from an inspection initiated in January revealed that there was no internal documentation of the work plan related to this data formulation, highlighting significant gaps in transparency and accountability within the companyβs operations regarding nuclear safety.
In response to these findings, Hayashi acknowledged the existing records, stating that nearly all necessary documents had been submitted, albeit with some challenges in confirming the communications with contractors involved in the project. He also reflected on the failure to identify discrepancies during checks performed by contractors, indicating a need for self-reflection and improvements in their processes. Chubu Electric aims to thoroughly investigate these issues to strengthen its operational integrity and restore public trust in its nuclear facilities.
