Chubu Electric Workers' Union Starts Negotiations Without Specifying Amounts After Hamaoka Data Fraud Incident During Spring Labor Offensive

The Chubu Electric Workers' Union has initiated wage negotiations without specifying amounts, following a fraud incident related to seismic data at the Hamaoka Nuclear Power Plant.

The Chubu Electric Workers' Union has commenced its wage negotiations for this year's spring labor offensive without revealing specific monetary requests for wage increases or bonuses. In their demand presented to the management on the 18th, they indicated a desire for a 'fair annual salary level' in light of the fraudulent data issue surrounding the Hamaoka nuclear plant in Shizuoka Prefecture. The union plans to evaluate whether to demand a base salary increase (Bea) during the negotiations with the management.

Last year, the union had requested a base increase of 12,000 yen, successfully achieving a full response from management. This year, however, the context has changed dramatically since fraudulent seismic data surfaced in January, which is a prerequisite for the restart of the Hamaoka nuclear plant. This incident has led to a halt in the review process for the plant's resumption, adding uncertainty to the management's outlook and impacting the negotiating climate.

According to Chubu Electric, the union based its requests on the current circumstances surrounding the company, emphasizing a call for a 'fair annual salary level' reflecting the contributions and efforts of its members over the years. This negotiation could be pivotal not only for the union's members but also for Chubu Electric's ability to address the fallout from the fraud incident while maintaining workforce morale and retention.
