Last year registered the fewest murders since the restoration of Latvia's independence

Latvia recorded its lowest number of murders since regaining independence, with only 33 confirmed homicides in the previous year.

In the past year, Latvia experienced its lowest recorded number of murders since it regained independence, according to data compiled by the State Police. A total of 33 people were killed, marking a decrease from 42 murders in the previous year. The statistics also revealed 20 attempted murders and the prevention of one homicide, alongside three double homicides, which is one more than the year before. The investigation into four murders remains unresolved.

The nature of the murders indicated that 96% were domestic in nature, with a significant number occurring in residential settings; specifically, 82% of the homicides took place in homes. Notably, knives were the weapon of choice in 32% of the cases. The demographic profile of those arrested for these crimes showed that 79% were men with an average age of 45, while 21% were women with an average age of 39. Correspondingly, the victims' profile showed that 67% of the deceased were men with an average age of 43, and 33% were women, also averaging 43 in age.

Interestingly, the report highlights a significant absence of contract killings, as there were no recorded murders involving characteristics of being contract-based in the past year. This situation suggests an overall trend towards a decrease in violent crime within the country, reflecting improved public safety and possibly the effectiveness of law enforcement strategies in Latvia.
