The number of crimes in Latvia increased last year; more criminal cases were completed by the prosecutor's office

Latvia saw an increase in crime rates last year, with particular rises in serious offenses, while the prosecutor's office managed to complete many cases without proceeding to court, easing the burden on the judiciary.

In Latvia, the crime rate increased by more than 3.5% last year, contrasting with previous years as serious offenses rose by over 19%. This trend raises concerns about public safety and highlights the challenges faced by law enforcement agencies. The increased statistic is indicative of changing criminal patterns and possibly an evolving socio-economic environment that may be influencing the crime landscape in the country.

One of the main priorities of the prosecutor's office is to ensure quality in the implementation of criminal procedures. Last year, 44% of all criminal cases were concluded by the prosecutor's office without being sent to trial, which significantly alleviated the workload of the courts. Most of these concluded cases were related to petty theft and driving under the influence, which accounted for around 60% of completed processes. This trend shows a responsive legal approach aimed at reducing the backlog of cases and optimizing the judicial process in Latvia.

Despite efforts to criminalize driving under the influence, the expected positive outcomes have not materialized as the incidence of such offenses remains unchanged annually. The general prosecutor highlighted that with the new regulations allowing for vehicle confiscation, most cases were taken to trial because offenders remained unwilling to accept the penalties, indicating a need for further reform in how such offenses are managed within the legal system.
