Roraima records five times more heat spots in February 2026

Roraima has reported a fivefold increase in the number of heat spots in February 2026 compared to the same period in 2025, according to government data.

Roraima, a state in Brazil, has seen a significant uptick in heat spots, with the total reaching 422 by February 24, 2026. This figure represents an increase of 339 heat spots compared to February 2025 when only 83 were recorded. The current number is the highest for the month since February 2024, during which the state faced severe drought and reported 2,057 heat spots.

The increase in heat spots is linked to the dry season that Roraima is currently experiencing, which is expected to last until April. Heat spots are identified as areas prone to dryness and rising temperatures, conditions that can lead to wildfires if not managed properly. This alarming trend is a cause for concern for environmentalists and local officials, who are aware of the fire risks posed by such a significant rise in heat spots.

Additionally, data from the Brazilian National Institute for Space Research (INPE) indicates that Roraima is currently leading the country in heat spots for the month of February, followed closely by Bahia with 247 occurrences. This situation calls for immediate attention and potential action to mitigate risks associated with wildfires as the state heads further into the dry season.
