Hellas Sat: New generation satellite communications
Hellas Sat is launching a new generation of satellite communications in Greece and Cyprus through strategic partnerships with leading French companies for high-speed optical telecommunications.
Hellas Sat is ushering in a new era of satellite communications in Greece and Cyprus with the introduction of high-speed laser optical telecommunications. This initiative includes a strategic partnership with prominent French organizations such as Thales Alenia Space, Safran Data Systems, and the French Space Agency (CNES). The collaboration aims to create the first geostationary satellite with optical telecommunications capabilities, enhancing communication services across both countries.
The partnerships were formalized through a framework agreement that outlines plans for the study, design, and future hosting of optical telecommunications on the upcoming Hellas Sat 5 satellite. This project promises advanced communications infrastructure capable of achieving very high data transmission rates, which could significantly improve capabilities in both civilian and defense sectors.
The announcement is taking place during the international conference "Battlefield ReDEFiNED 2026" in Nicosia, bringing together government officials, military representatives, and leaders from technological organizations. The event highlights the importance of this collaboration in shaping the future of satellite communications, as Greece and Cyprus position themselves as key players in the advancing field of telecommunications technology and defense strategy.
