BOAK: Road safety interventions in 3 sections

A new program to improve road safety on three high-risk segments of the North Road Axis of Crete has been approved by the Greek Minister of Infrastructure and Transport.

The Greek Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Christos Dimas, has approved a program aimed at enhancing road safety on the North Road Axis of Crete (BOAK) by targeting three dangerous road sections in Rethymno and Chania. The selected segments for intervention include Souda to Georgioupolis, Rethymno to Geropotamos, and Petres to Atsipopoulo. This initiative comes as part of a broader strategy to reduce the frequency of road accidents until the modern highway is completed.

The planned upgrades will involve significant modifications, including the redesign of road sections to incorporate a three-lane format dubbed 'b2+1', featuring a safe overtaking lane measuring between 1 to 2.5 kilometers long. These enhancements aim to address traffic safety urgently, reflecting the Ministry's commitment to infrastructural improvements that prioritizes the welfare of road users.

The implementation of these safety interventions marks a critical step towards improving local transportation infrastructure in Crete amid ongoing developments for a new highway. It demonstrates the government's proactive approach to addressing the persistent issues of road safety in the region while enhancing overall driving conditions for residents and visitors alike.
