Roads and sidewalks in the Oslo area covered with ice

Mild weather and rain in Eastern Norway have resulted in icy roads and sidewalks, prompting warnings from traffic authorities.

Mild weather and rain in Eastern Norway have created hazardous conditions on many roads and sidewalks, particularly in the Oslo region, where icy patches have been reported this morning. Trude Lindstad from the Traffic Control Center East indicated that it is mainly the county roads and smaller streets that are most affected, especially in the Romerike and Innlandet areas. The Norwegian Meteorological Institute has issued a yellow warning for large parts of Eastern Norway due to the risk of freezing rain and ice, which remains in effect until noon on Thursday.

Despite these warnings, main highways such as the E6 and E18 are currently reported to be in good condition, as they have been adequately salted. Lindstad reassured that traffic conditions on these major roads should not pose significant problems. However, she cautioned that the rain could wash away the salt spread on smaller roads, making them potentially slicker. As a precaution, she urged drivers to exercise extra caution, reduce speed, and adjust their driving to match the treacherous winter conditions.

In Oslo, the icy conditions have impacted several areas, particularly the sidewalks in the city center. Public transportation operator Ruter has specifically warned about the risks in areas surrounding the train station, emphasizing the importance of caution for pedestrians and drivers alike. The combination of rain and freezing temperatures creates a considerable risk of slips and falls, making it crucial for everyone to remain vigilant under these winter circumstances.
