Finnish clothing brand shuts down after 20 years
The Finnish clothing brand Myssyfarmi, known for its use of Finnish sheep wool, is shutting down after 20 years in business, starting a clearance sale as it navigates profitability challenges.
Myssyfarmi, a clothing brand based in Pöytyä, Finland, is officially shutting its doors after two decades of operation. Known for utilizing Finnish sheep wool, Myssyfarmi is initiating a clearance sale as it ceases all business activities. Anna Rauhansuu, the CEO, emphasized that the company does not face any immediate financial crises but has decided to wind down operations in a calm and orderly manner. The decision to shut down stems from an inability to achieve a sufficiently profitable volume of sales. Despite the adjustments made to cut costs, the sales figures continued to decline. Myssyfarmi’s unique offerings included over 100,000 hats knitted by Finnish grandmothers, which were sold in global fashion metros, including appearances in prominent retail spaces like Galeries Lafayette in Paris and noted magazines like Vogue Scandinavia. Founded with the mission of enhancing and adding value to Finnish primary production, Myssyfarmi has sold both knitted patterns and ready-to-wear wool products fashioned by skilled knitters, primarily grandmothers from Finland. The brand's closure marks a noteworthy moment in the Finnish fashion landscape, reflecting broader industry challenges regarding market sustainability and profitability.
