Ladoke Akintola University of Technology mourns the loss of six final-year nursing students who died in a road crash while traveling to campus for exams.
The Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) is in mourning following the tragic deaths of six final-year nursing students in a road accident on the IlorinβOgbomoso Road. The university's management released a statement expressing their sorrow and highlighting the monumental loss to the university community. The students were identified as Shehu Nana Firdawsi Hamza, Idris Jamila, Abdulraheem Maimunah Hamza, Blessing Kevwe, Owoicho Elizabeth, and Aroke Ozavize Victoria, all enrolled in the Open and Distance Learning Nursing programme.
According to the information gathered, the students had boarded the same commercial bus from Suleja, Niger State, heading to campus for their final examinations when the tragedy struck. The accident occurred at Otte in Kwara State on a Sunday, which raised concerns about road safety and the conditions of public transportation in Nigeria. Such incidents amplify the need for stricter regulations and safety measures for commercial vehicles to prevent future tragedies.
The institution's Registrar, Olayinka Balogun, emphasized the collective grief experienced by students and staff alike, as these young individuals were not only key members of the university but also future healthcare providers in Nigeria. This heartbreaking event serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by students traveling for essential academic purposes and the impact of road accidents that claim young lives before their time.
