"They attempted an infiltration for terrorist purposes": the official account from Cuba about the intercepted US boat

Cuban authorities stated that the ten occupants of an American boat intercepted in its territorial waters intended to infiltrate the country with terrorist motives.

On Wednesday, the Cuban Ministry of Interior reported that ten individuals aboard a fast boat intercepted in its territorial waters had intentions to infiltrate Cuba for terrorist purposes. The boat, which reportedly entered illegally, began shooting at the Cuban border guard troop that tried to signal it for identification. In the confrontation, four individuals were killed and six others were injured, prompting medical assistance for a Cuban officer as well.

The Ministry of Interior further clarified that all of the injured individuals on the boat were Cuban residents of the United States. Authorities seized a range of weapons from the boat, including assault rifles, handguns, homemade explosive devices, bulletproof vests, telescopic sights, and camouflage uniforms. This incident raises serious concerns regarding security in the region and the potential for acts of violence spilling over into Cuba from external sources.

Cuba's official narrative positions this interception as a protective measure against terrorism, emphasizing the need for vigilance in the face of threats from abroad, especially given the ongoing political tensions with the United States. The action underlines the challenges faced by Cuban authorities in maintaining sovereignty and security while dealing with complex international relations and domestic unrest tied to emigration and dissidence.
