Ondo APC congress sparks division concerns, elders warn
Elders of the All Progressives Congress in Ondo State express concern over divisions within the party following disruptions at a recent congress.
Elders from the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State, organized under the PBAT Mandate Elders Forum, have raised alarms about the state of division within the party after a chaotic ward congress. Violence marred the congress, particularly in Idanre, where party members were reportedly attacked by hoodlums, leading to injuries and property damage, including the burning of a vehicle. Among the casualties was the brother of the APC chairman, Raphael Adetimehin, who was assaulted by these political thugs.
Despite these incidents, the congress committee, headed by Mrs Margaret Araruenu, reported that the event was successfully conducted. However, elder statesman Dr Ademola Ijabiyi, speaking during a monthly meeting in Akure, highlighted the ongoing crisis within the party, emphasizing that such issues must be addressed to support President Bola Tinubu's re-election bid. He articulated the need for unity and urged party leaders to come together to resolve conflicts that threaten the party's strength and electoral prospects.
The sentiments expressed by the elders underscore a precarious moment for the APC in Ondo State as it strives to maintain cohesion ahead of key elections. The violence and subsequent grievances raised could have significant implications for both local and national politics, especially in the context of Tinubu’s campaign. If these divisions are not reconciled, they could undermine the party's performance in the polls and affect its long-term viability in the region.
