The worker turnover rate in Campinas' retail sector has reached an all-time high of 71.5% in 2025, according to data from Novo Caged analyzed by SindiVarejista Campinas. This figure represents a substantial increase from the 43.8% turnover rate recorded in 2020, indicating that more than half of formal employment relationships in the retail sector were renewed over the year. This high turnover rate is significant as it reflects the dynamic nature of the local labor market and highlights potential challenges faced by employers in retaining staff.
The data reveals that Campinas' retail sector comprises 73 sub-sectors and employs over 61,600 formal workers. Notably, ten sub-sectors experienced turnover rates exceeding 80% in 2025. In four of these sub-sectors, the turnover rates surpassed 100%, implying that all employees in those areas were replaced within the year. The highest turnover rates were reported in travel articles, footwear, toys and recreational articles, and department stores, indicating specific trends in consumer behavior and employment practices within these sub-sectors.
This record turnover may have implications for businesses in terms of hiring processes, training costs, and the overall service quality offered to consumers. It also raises concerns about job stability and employee satisfaction within the retail workforce in Campinas. Stakeholders in the industry will need to explore strategies to attract and retain talent to ensure a reliable workforce capable of meeting consumer demands in an increasingly competitive retail environment.
