Oyetola reaffirms Nigeria’s commitment to zero carbon emissions
Nigeria's Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Dr. Adegboyega Oyetola, has expressed the country's dedication to achieving net-zero shipping emissions by aligning with global climate strategies.
The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Dr. Adegboyega Oyetola, highlighted Nigeria's commitment to achieving net-zero shipping emissions during the IMO/GreenVoyage2050 National Stakeholder Workshop held in Lagos. He emphasized that this initiative aligns with the International Maritime Organization's 2023 GHG Strategy and represents a significant step towards maritime decarbonisation. Oyetola underscored the importance of creating a National Maritime Decarbonisation Action Plan as a crucial framework to enhance the competitiveness of Nigeria’s maritime sector amidst global climate challenges.
Oyetola, who was represented at the workshop by the Director of Maritime Safety and Security, John Ogwuche, conveyed the urgency for cooperative action among various stakeholders in the maritime industry. He urged shipowners, port authorities, and oil and gas operators to contribute actively toward reducing emissions. This collaborative effort is seen as essential in fostering an environment focused on sustainable maritime operations and ensuring that Nigeria meets its international commitments concerning climate change.
The emphasis on stakeholder engagement and technical collaboration is part of Nigeria's broader strategy to modernize its maritime sector while adhering to stringent environmental standards. Through these initiatives, Nigeria aims to not only align with global emissions reduction targets but also to propel its maritime industry into a sustainable future, thereby enhancing both local and international competitiveness.
