Criminals pretend to be lawyer, judge, and prosecutor and simulate virtual hearing to scam merchant in PR
A merchant in Paranavaí, Brazil, was scammed after criminals posed as legal figures and conducted a fake virtual hearing.
In Paranavaí, a merchant named Alex Ferreira dos Santos fell victim to a scam where criminals impersonated a lawyer, judge, and prosecutor during a virtual hearing. The scammers managed to clone the number of the lawyer involved in a case against a bank, leading Santos to believe that the actions taken were legitimate. They provided him with specific details about his legal case, intensifying the credibility of their claims.
During what was presented as a video call, the victim was unable to see the faces of those posing as the legal authorities. The criminals informed Santos that his case had resulted in a favorable decision, and he was entitled to a payment of R$ 17,900. They insisted he needed a strong internet connection to proceed with the 'hearing,' which further lured him into the trap.
Ultimately, Santos ended up losing R$ 1,412 to the fraudsters. This incident highlights the growing sophistication of scams that exploit legal processes to deceive unsuspecting individuals. It serves as a stark reminder for the public to be vigilant about verification when dealing with legal matters online, particularly in the wake of increasing digital crimes related to impersonation and fraud.
