Need to Reduce Violence Against Elderly Citizens

The Elderly Citizens' Association calls on the Icelandic government to investigate and reduce the prevalence of violence against older individuals.

The Elderly Citizens' Association in Reykjavik has urged the Icelandic government to take action against the rising instances of violence directed towards older citizens. They emphasized the need for a comprehensive study and action plan to address the issue, indicating that the problem has been exacerbated as evidenced by a significant increase in reports of elder abuse. In fact, a report indicated that double the number of elderly individuals sought help from Bjarkarhlíð due to violence in the previous year compared to the year before that.

The meeting where this resolution was made highlighted incidents where violence often comes from adult children abusing their aging parents, manifesting in forms of psychological or financial abuse. Notably, neglect, including the denial of essential medications, is a significant concern brought to light in the discussions. Such abuse often goes unreported, with a considerable number of cases remaining confidential due to the stigma or fear associated with reporting abuse against family members.

The association's statement reflects a growing awareness and urgency around elder abuse in Iceland, suggesting that it is a troubling trend that requires immediate attention and comprehensive interventions. There is an alarmingly low rate of such violence being reported to authorities, highlighting the need for public awareness campaigns and better support services for both victims and their families.
