Botswana: Council Introduces App for Rates Collection

Lobatse Town Council has launched an app in partnership with First National Bank to improve the efficiency of rate collections from property owners.

In a move to enhance digital revenue collection, Lobatse Town Council has launched an FNB App aimed at maximizing efficiency in rates collection. During a recent Full Council meeting, Mayor Aron Ganakgomo emphasized the importance of leveraging technology to address the challenges posed by low rates collection. This app will facilitate property owners to pay their rates conveniently through cell phone banking or online transactions, ideally increasing the council's revenue stream.

The mayor noted that the introduction of the app was particularly timely, as First National Bank (FNB) commands a significant share of the property market, with 60 to 65 percent of property owners utilizing their services. This strategic partnership is expected to provide an accessible payment solution for the community, enabling rates debtors to settle their accounts from the comfort of their homes. This initiative is a part of the council’s ongoing efforts to deploy effective solutions that meet the needs of residents while increasing operational efficiency.

Moreover, the council is working on expanding remote payment options through a Payment Gateway, with the aim of further widening access to payment solutions for residents. This aligns with a broader trend of digitization in public services, ensuring that citizens can interact with local government services more easily and efficiently, which is especially important in modern governance where digital solutions are increasingly critical for improving service delivery.
