Young people in Rautalampi municipality recruited as nicotine agents – this is how it affected snuff use in schools

In Rautalampi, Finland, young people serve as nicotine agents to educate their peers on the dangers of nicotine, leading to a reduction in tobacco use in schools.

In Rautalampi, a municipality in North Savo, Finland, a unique initiative has allowed young people to become 'nicotine agents' who educate their peers about the dangers associated with nicotine use. Since the implementation of the nicotine agent model by the Preventive Substance Abuse Foundation (Ehyt ry) in 2019, the municipality has seen a notable decline in the increased usage of snuff among students. This program is particularly significant as it empowers young people to take an active role in health education within their schools.

The nicotine agents consist of members of the youth council, who conduct information sessions about nicotine starting from the fifth grade and continuing through high school. Mooses Julkunen, the chairperson of the youth council, shares that the students generally respond positively to these informational sessions, engaging actively by asking questions and participating in discussions. This indicates a successful reception of the program among the students, pointing to a broader culture of health awareness.

Furthermore, the interest shown by students in specific components of nicotine products, such as propylene glycol, highlights a growing curiosity among youth regarding the substances they encounter. Propylene glycol, noted for its use in defensive materials for aviation, serves as a relatable point of discussion for students, leading to an informed dialogue about nicotine and its effects. This initiative not only informs students but fosters an environment where youth can support one another in making healthier choices regarding tobacco and nicotine use.
