Ukraine calls on China to participate in peace negotiations
Ukraine has directly urged China to play a significant role in peace negotiations amid the ongoing war with Russia.
The war in Ukraine has entered its fifth year, and Ukraine is reaching out to China for assistance in achieving peace. During an event at the Ukrainian embassy in Beijing to mark four years since Russia's invasion, Ukrainian Ambassador Olexander Nechytaylo highlighted China's unique position to contribute positively to the peace process. He urged foreign diplomats to not waste the opportunity for peace, emphasizing collaboration in the quest for resolution amidst ongoing conflict.
At the same event, Jorge Toledo, head of the EU delegation in China, called for an immediate ceasefire, underscoring the importance of maintaining territorial integrity despite differing views with China regarding the Russian aggression. Toledo reminded attendees of China's special responsibility as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, indicating that even with existing differences, there remains common ground for defense.
China reiterated its official stance through a spokesperson from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, reinforcing its commitment to promoting dialogue and peace in the region. As the conflict persists, these diplomatic overtures highlight the strategic dynamics involving major world powers and raise questions about the effectiveness of international mediation efforts, especially as the global community watches closely for any shifts in China's approach to the situation.
