Guayaquil censuses 'canillitas': first results show greater presence of women aged 20 to 50

A recent census in Guayaquil reveals a growing number of women aged 20 to 50 among the city's traditional newsstand vendors, known as 'canillitas.'

Guayaquil is currently conducting a census of its street vendors, referred to as 'canillitas,' to facilitate urban reforms aimed at organizing public spaces. This initiative began in March of the previous year and has made significant progress, with nearly 50% completion. The census focuses on key administrative areas within the city, including various zones in the southern part of Guayaquil.

Preliminary findings from the census indicate a notable presence of women aged between 20 and 50 among the canillitas, demonstrating a shift in the demographics of these traditional vendors who have long sold newspapers and magazines on the streets. In addition to their staple offerings, many have diversified their sales to include snacks and sweets, reflecting changes in consumer demand and street vending practices.

The census aims not only to document the current status of canillitas but also to inform new urban policies that will enhance the management of street vendor activities in Guayaquil. By establishing a clearer understanding of vendor distribution and demographics, city officials hope to implement reforms that will improve the organization and aesthetics of public spaces while supporting the livelihoods of these vendors.
