The Return to Classes in the City at the Only School in the Country Where Mandarin Chinese is Taught

The school year 2026 begins in Buenos Aires at the city's only bilingual institution teaching Mandarin Chinese.

In Parque Patricios, Buenos Aires, the 2026 school year commenced with a unique ceremony incorporating Mandarin Chinese alongside traditional Argentine symbols. The Bilingual Argentine-Chinese School, established in 2014, is the only public institution in Argentina and Latin America to offer a dual immersion model in Spanish and Mandarin. This innovative educational environment promotes the teaching of mathematics, science, literature, and art in both languages.

Initially founded through a partnership between the Buenos Aires Ministry of Education and the Education Commission of Beijing, the school started with early childhood education and later expanded to primary education. By 2021, the first complete graduating class had emerged, and the institution now serves 373 students — 336 in primary and 37 in early childhood. The pedagogical approach involves a balanced distribution of time and content between Spanish and Mandarin, exemplifying a commitment to linguistic and cultural diversity.

The opening ceremony for the 2026 academic year not only showcased this bilingual identity but also emphasized the growing significance of Mandarin in Argentina's educational landscape. As more students enroll and the school continues to thrive, it reflects broader trends of international collaboration in education, and the increasing importance of Mandarin as a global language, hinting at future cultural exchanges and opportunities for Argentine students.
