On the ice of water bodies – only responsibly: reminders of prohibitions and possible fines
Driving on the ice of water bodies is prohibited in Lithuania, with specific exceptions outlined in the country’s legislation regarding special land use conditions.
In Lithuania, driving on the ice of water bodies is regulated by Article 98, Paragraph 6 of the Special Land Use Conditions Law, which prohibits the use of motor vehicles, tractors, and self-propelled machines on the ice of surface water bodies. This prohibition, however, does not apply in specific cases such as organized commercial fishing using motor vehicles, when amateur fishing occurs with non-road vehicles for transporting anglers and equipment, or during emergency rescue operations.
Additionally, there are allowances for driving on ice during organized sports events or training sessions. Authorities are urging the public to adhere to these regulations to ensure safety and prevent accidents, especially considering the risks associated with driving on unstable ice. Violators of these rules may face penalties or fines, which underline the importance of responsible behavior on frozen bodies of water.
The reminder from the Lithuanian authorities serves to enhance awareness regarding the risks tied to ice activities and to ensure compliance with the law. Given the potential dangers, individuals are encouraged to prioritize safety and follow legal guidelines while engaging in activities on ice-covered lakes and rivers.
