Campo Grande City Council's Board Election Suspended by Court Decision

A court in Mato Grosso do Sul suspended the early election of the Board of the Campo Grande City Council for the 2027/2028 term due to constitutional concerns.

A recent ruling from a Mato Grosso do Sul judge has suspended the election of the Board of the Campo Grande City Council for the upcoming 2027/2028 term. This election was initially conducted in July 2025, exceeding a year before the appropriate time for such a vote. The decision was made by Judge Eduardo Lacerda Trevisan of the 2nd Court of Diffused Rights, as part of a popular action taken against the election's timing and legitimacy.

The legal challenge was initiated by lawyer Luiz Henrique Correia de Pádua Pereira, who argued that the premature election contradicted democratic principles such as the contemporaneity of the election, alternation of power, and administrative morality. Upon reviewing the circumstances, Judge Trevisan found ample grounds to issue a preliminary order suspending the election, citing potential irregularities and the risk of institutional damage should the election proceed.

In the ruling, Trevisan underscored the importance of the popular action as a legitimate tool for contesting administrative acts that undermine ethical governance. This case reflects ongoing concerns about political practices in local governance and highlights the judiciary's role in upholding democratic principles in Brazil.
