With the start of the 2026 K League 1 season just around the corner, the excitement among football fans in South Korea is palpable, as demonstrated during a recent media day event held at the Swiss Grand Hotel in Seoul. Coaches and fans of the twelve participating teams rallied together, showcasing their support and team spirit in anticipation of the new season. Notably, last season, the K League 1 attracted over 2.2 million spectators, underscoring the league’s growing popularity and the passionate following it has cultivated over the years.
The Daejeon Hana Citizen football club, after achieving its best-ever performance by finishing second last season, is being touted as a chief contender for the championship in the upcoming season. Several coaches have expressed their belief in Daejeon’s potential, highlighting the club's proactive approach in the transfer market. They have bolstered their squad by acquiring players like Um Won-sang and Gustav Rubikson, both of whom have prior championship experience, as well as João Victor and securing Ha Chang-rae from loan. Coaches, including Jeong Kyung-ho of Gangwon FC, have stressed the importance of investment in the league and hope that Daejeon’s efforts will strengthen Korea's competitive edge in Asian football.
Defending champions Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors are also considered strong contenders for the title. After a coaching change where Gus Poyet left and Jeong Jeong-yong took over, the team has faced challenges with the departure of key players, yet continues to enhance their roster. With critical tactical adjustments and a storied history of winning, Jeonbuk remains a formidable opponent. Both Jeong and Daejeon’s coach, Hwang Sun-hong, acknowledge that to win the title, they must overcome one another, setting the stage for what promises to be an intensely competitive season ahead.
