Latvians write to Trump at least twice a year. The World Association of Free Latvians, founded across the ocean, has been operating for 70 years

The World Association of Free Latvians has continued its efforts for 70 years, focusing on raising awareness of the Baltic states' occupation and maintaining the idea of Latvia's independence.

The World Association of Free Latvians (PBLA) has been active for the past 70 years since its establishment, with central goals focused on highlighting the occupation of the Baltic states during the Cold War and keeping alive the vision of Latvia's independence. This organization played a significant role during the transition to NATO and had notable interactions with former President George Bush, emphasizing its historical importance in the context of international relations and support for Latvia.

In light of recent events, particularly Russia's invasion of Ukraine, there has been a resurgence of activism among the Latvian diaspora, reigniting the spirit of demonstrations that were prominent in earlier decades. The leadership of PBLA has seen a generational shift, with younger representatives emerging to replace the older exiled members. Robert Kukainis, son of the legendary PBLA chairman Janis Kukainis, highlights the work of the new diaspora, which is actively involved in various fields yet remains dedicated to promoting Latvian issues.

Robert Kukainis holds multiple roles, including honorary consul for Latvia in South Carolina and leader of the Latvian Freedom Foundation, which has historically been significant in collecting funds for political endeavors aimed at Latvia's liberation. He currently dedicates considerable time weekly to 'Latvian matters,' reinforcing the ongoing commitment of the diaspora to their homeland's independence and political landscape. This reflection on the past and present shows both continuity and change within the Latvian community. However, the challenges ahead remain, particularly in light of geopolitical tensions.
