IFMA in Codó creates Museum of Fossils, Minerals, and Rocks with pieces from various regions of Brazil and abroad

The Federal Institute of Maranhão (IFMA) in Codó has established a museum featuring 158 specimens of rocks, minerals, and fossils, collected over 15 years by professor Aciel Tavares Ribeiro.

The Federal Institute of Maranhão (IFMA) Campus Codó has inaugurated a museum that showcases a diverse collection of 158 specimens, including rocks, minerals, and fossils. This collection, meticulously gathered over the last 15 years by professor Aciel Tavares Ribeiro, is aimed at providing a comprehensive educational resource for students and the public. Although the museum space is still undergoing renovations to better accommodate visitors, some pieces are already featured in traveling exhibitions.

Among the impressive collection are 130 rock and mineral specimens along with 28 fossils and a unique box containing cylindrical soil samples known as geological cores. These cores are critical for analyzing the geological composition of the area, enhancing the educational experience offered by the museum. Professor Ribeiro's journey began with a modest personal collection displayed solely for his children, demonstrating his passion for geology and education.

With plans to develop the museum into a permanent venue for education, research, and outreach, this initiative reflects the growing importance of scientific education within the community. The effort will foster a deeper understanding of geological sciences among students and visitors, making the museum a notable attraction within Codó and potentially beyond, as it seeks to engage with both local and wider audiences.
