Winter storms reveal possible 17th-century shipwreck tied to armed Caribbean voyages

Recent winter storms in the UK have exposed the remains of a 17th-century shipwreck believed to be 'The Fame,' a Dutch merchant vessel that sank in 1631.

In a remarkable archaeological find, winter storms have unearthed the remains of a 17th-century shipwreck at Studland Beach in Dorset, England. The discovery was announced by Bournemouth University, which identified the vessel as possibly being 'The Fame,' a merchant ship from Hoorn, Netherlands, that met its fate in 1631 after running aground. The exposed portion of the ship measures approximately 20 feet in length and 6.5 feet in width, showcasing a structure that includes at least 15 frames connected by wooden treenails to five outer hull planks. While the frames appear eroded, the condition of the hull planks has been noted as excellent.
