A 17th-century warship wreck has emerged in Stockholm as the water level has dropped unusually low
A 17th-century warship wreck has resurfaced in Stockholm due to an unusual drop in the Baltic Sea water levels.
A historic 17th-century shipwreck belonging to the Swedish Navy has surfaced in Stockholm following an unprecedented reduction in the Baltic Sea water levels. The wreck, which has been submerged for over four centuries, began to emerge above the water surface near Kastellholmen Island in early February. Experts suggest that the ship was sunk around the year 1640, with its intended purpose tied to the construction of a bridge leading to the island. Marine archaeologist Jim Hansson from Stockholm’s Maritime Museum noted that such a low water level in the Baltic Sea has not been recorded in nearly a century, pointing to an elongated high-pressure period in the Nordic region that has caused the sea levels to recede significantly.
