Civil Police arrest 5 in operation against Comando Vermelho group that blew up ATMs and robbed luxury homes

The Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro captured five individuals linked to a faction of Comando Vermelho involved in ATM explosions and luxury home robberies.

On Wednesday, September 25, the Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro launched an operation targeting a faction of Comando Vermelho known for its illicit activities, particularly the exploitation of ATMs and robberies in affluent neighborhoods. By the latest report, five arrests had been made, including one police officer. Law enforcement executed a total of 16 arrest warrants and approximately 52 search and seizure warrants across Rio de Janeiro and Santa Catarina, and requested a freeze on around R$30 million associated with the criminal group.

The operation was conducted by the Organized Crime and Special Inquiries Police Department (Draco-IE), which utilized intelligence units to identify locations targeted by the group. The criminals were noted for using industrial blowtorches in their attacks, showcasing a level of sophistication in their method of operation. The investigations pointed to a collaborative network where criminals from Santa Catarina would travel to Rio de Janeiro to receive logistical support from Comando Vermelho operatives, thereby strengthening their illegal activities in both regions.

This crackdown on organized crime highlights the ongoing battle between law enforcement and powerful criminal factions in Brazil. The arrests and asset freezes are significant steps in disrupting criminal networks, but the existence of such structured operations indicates a serious challenge for authorities as they grapple with organized crime’s pervasive influence in Brazilian society.
