M. Jurkynas: LRT amendments still need to be discussed within the Council

M. Jurkynas expressed the need for internal discussions within the LRT Council regarding proposed amendments to the LRT law following a meeting with the Chairman of the Seimas.

M. Jurkynas emphasized the importance of an internal dialogue within the LRT Council about the proposed amendments to the LRT law after a meeting with Seimas Chairman Juozas Olekas. He cautioned against individual assessments by Council members leading to disconnected discussions, which could hinder the overall dialogue process. The focus should remain on collective understanding and cohesive decision-making.

During the meeting, the Council's primary agenda was to seek clarity regarding the LRT law amendments discussed in recent months. The parliamentarians involved in the drafting of the amendments have proposed the establishment of a new governance structure for the public broadcaster, including a reformed Council composition and new grounds for the early dismissal of the general director. Jurkynas noted that the Council's role would be to listen to these proposals, ask questions, and evaluate how the working group has integrated findings from the State Audit Office following an audit of LRT.

This proposed restructuring of the LRT governance framework demonstrates an ongoing effort to enhance transparency and accountability within Lithuania's public broadcasting system. The new framework aims to establish a Council made up of 15 members, shifting towards a more robust and responsible governance model. The discussion's outcome could significantly influence the operational dynamics of LRT as well as public perceptions of its accountability and effectiveness.
