Gonda: Lawyer of High Court Beaten to Death, Mourning in the Village, Know the Case
A High Court lawyer was brutally killed in Gonda, Uttar Pradesh, during a land dispute, prompting arrests and community unrest.
On February 22, a High Court lawyer named Subhash Chandra Mishra was killed in Sudai Purwa village of Gonda, Uttar Pradesh, due to a land dispute. The incident occurred when the lawyer's brother Arun Mishra and four associates attacked him with sticks and iron rods, despite a stay order issued by the court prohibiting such actions on the disputed fields. The lawyer was severely injured and succumbed to his injuries in a district hospital shortly thereafter. Following the incident, Arun Mishra and three others were arrested by the police based on a complaint filed by the lawyer's son, Abhishek Mishra.
Abhishek, also a lawyer at the High Court, expressed deep concern over the police's negligence in handling the situation, especially since the court had already ordered against any interference in the land dispute. He informed the police about the court's directive on February 6, yet they failed to intervene when his cousin began plowing the disputed land. The violent confrontation that ensued resulted in his father's tragic death, caused by a head injury from an iron rod, with other family members also sustaining injuries in the altercation.
This tragic incident underscores the ongoing issues of land disputes in India and raises questions about the efficacy of law enforcement in protecting citizens against such violence. The community is in mourning, grappling with the impact of this brutal attack, and calling for justice in the wake of this tragic event.
