Electoral reform will be presented with or without the approval of the PT and Verde, Sheinbaum says

Claudia Sheinbaum announced that an electoral reform proposal will be sent to Congress regardless of agreements with the Labor Party and the Green Party in Mexico.

Claudia Sheinbaum, the president of Mexico City, stated during her morning press conference that the electoral reform—which empowers the National Electoral Institute (INE) to combat fake news on social media in real time during campaigns—will be presented to the Congress of the Union with or without the support of the Labor Party (PT) and the Green Party (PVEM). She emphasized that despite postponing the delivery of the initiative, certain key aspects are non-negotiable. She indicated that the reform isn't about making slight adjustments but maintaining core principles she believes are vital for the initiative.

Sheinbaum highlighted that the reform is also a response to criticisms from other political parties, including the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI). It aims not only at recognizing minority parties but also includes cost-reducing measures for elections and a reduction in the financial expenditures of local Congresses. By including provisions for a streamlined election process, the proposal seeks to address issues of representation and cost management in local legislative bodies.

The electoral reform has significant implications for Mexican politics, particularly as it challenges existing powers and addresses modern issues such as the spread of misinformation during election campaigns. Sheinbaum's firm stance underlines a broader intention to modernize Mexico's electoral processes while ensuring representation for diverse political voices, even in the face of opposition from established parties.
