Sheinbaum acknowledges agreement with PT and PVEM: 'We will not give up on electoral reform'
President Claudia Sheinbaum has acknowledged the support of the PT and PVEM for her electoral reform Plan B and emphasized the need for continued advocacy despite the initial failure of her proposal.
President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico has recognized the backing of the Labor Party (PT) and the Green Party (PVEM) for her proposed electoral reform, referred to as Plan B. This acknowledgment comes after the Mexican Chamber of Deputies voted against her initial electoral reform proposal. In a press conference, Sheinbaum asserted, "We will not give up on electoral reform; it may not have succeeded this time, but perhaps in the future it will," indicating her determination to pursue changes in the electoral system despite setbacks.
Sheinbaum outlined the terms of the agreement with both parties, emphasizing the need to reorganize the budget at local Congresses, the Senate, and concerning the number of local councilors. She elaborated that there is a consensus on the necessity of reducing privileges for political parties and ensuring that changes affect all elected deputies, an issue that has been a significant concern among the electorate. This reiteration reflects her administration's commitment to addressing public demands for reforms in political representation.
Additionally, Sheinbaum highlighted that the reallocation of resources obtained from these reforms would be directed toward public works projects in municipalities. This approach not only aims to tackle the electoral framework but also to respond to immediate community needs, potentially enhancing her administration's public image by tying electoral reform to tangible benefits for citizens. By stressing the importance of these initiatives, Sheinbaum is setting the stage for future electoral discussions and mobilizing support from both the public and her political allies.
