J. Olekas: I hope that today we will register the amendments to the LRT law project
The Speaker of the Seimas expressed hope that a project for amendments to the LRT law will be officially submitted for consideration this Wednesday.
During a press conference on Wednesday, the Speaker of the Seimas, J. Olekas, expressed optimism about the registration of amendments to the LRT law. This formal documentation is believed to facilitate discussions about the proposed changes, which aim to improve the governance structure of Lithuania's public broadcaster. Olekas highlighted that the project would soon be translated and submitted to the Venice Commission for review, allowing experts and interested parties to respond and contribute to the legislative process.
A working group within the Seimas has been deliberating for several months on the proposed amendments to the LRT law, culminating in an agreement to advance the project. Key changes include the establishment of a governing board for LRT, adjustments to the composition of the board, and new grounds for the early dismissal of the general director. The suggested board would consist of 15 members, with four appointed by the President and four by the Seimas, as per the current procedures.
The proposed legislation reflects a collaborative effort between both the ruling and opposition factions, aimed at enhancing public media governance and accountability in Lithuania. If successful, the amendments could be presented during the upcoming spring session, underscoring a commitment to legislative reform and the importance of public broadcasting in the country.
