J. Olekas: The LRT law project may be adjusted upon receiving the Venice Commission's conclusions

Lithuanian parliament leader J. Olekas stated that the new public broadcaster law may be amended based on the recommendations of the Venice Commission, which will be available before the parliamentary session starts.

Lithuanian parliament speaker J. Olekas announced that the final position of the Venice Commission regarding the public broadcaster law will be available prior to the start of the parliamentary session. He expressed optimism that discussions held with the Venice Commission would result in a law that aligns with their recommendations once the legislative proposals are considered by the Seimas. The law, which aims to establish new governance structures for the public broadcaster, will be reviewed by a working group before submission to the parliament.

For the past few months, a parliamentary working group has been meeting to shape amendments to the public broadcaster law. The proposed changes include the establishment of a board for the public broadcaster and revisions to the conditions under which the general director can be dismissed. These modifications reflect a significant shift in the governance of public broadcasting in Lithuania and indicate an intention to enhance governance structures in accordance with European standards.

The planned submission of this law to the Seimas in the upcoming spring session underscores the urgency with which the parliament is pursuing these reforms. Given the current political climate and the consultations with the Venice Commission, the outcome of these legislative efforts may set a precedent in the governance of public media in Lithuania, emphasizing the importance of adhering to international recommendations in fostering independent media.
