Mārtiņš Buclers, born on December 12, 1866, in the Zemgale region of Latvia, is notable for his significant role in collecting and preserving Latvian folk songs, having gathered around 1,000 songs during his lifetime. His work influenced the compilation of 'Latvju dainas' by Krišjānis Barons, where 355 of the songs he collected were included. As the 160th anniversary of his birth approaches in 2026, Turaidas muzejrezervāts is planning to organize an exhibition to honor Buclers’ contributions to Latvian culture, particularly in photography and folk traditions. This exhibition aims to celebrate his legacy and inform the public about the importance of his work in the context of Latvian cultural history. Given that Buclers was not only a collector of folk songs but also a musician, his life illustrates the intersection of different cultural expressions in Latvia.
