‘Daejeon and Chungnam Integration’ Put on Hold, Governor Kim Young-hwan of Chungbuk Says 'Welcome... No Rushed Integration'

Chungbuk Governor Kim Young-hwan welcomed the postponement of a special law for the administrative integration of Chungnam and Daejeon, emphasizing the need for thorough consideration and regional representation.

In a recent press conference, Chungbuk Governor Kim Young-hwan expressed his approval regarding the postponement of the special law on the administrative integration of Daejeon and Chungnam. This decision came during the review by the National Assembly's Legislative and Judiciary Committee, and Governor Kim highlighted that it is a positive move that the government did not push ahead with the integration plan without adequate reflection. He noted that citizens' voices from Daejeon and Chungnam must be fully considered before proceeding with any integration process, especially given the proximity of elections which could lead to hasty decisions with serious repercussions.

Governor Kim further asserted that any plans that would isolate Chungbuk or lead to its eventual annexation into the larger integration should be firmly opposed. He clarified his stance on the integration by indicating that he does not oppose the idea of a broader Chungcheong regional integration, which would encompass Chungbuk as well. Additionally, he urged for the legislation to establish the Chungbuk Special Self-Governing Province, which would strengthen local autonomy and financial support while promoting balanced national development.

The proposal for the Chungbuk Special Self-Governing Province was previously introduced by a group of lawmakers from the ruling People Power Party, indicating a structural shift in governance focusing on specific regional needs. The drafted law comprises several key articles that outline plans for enhanced local governance, financial independence, and various provisions to stimulate growth, highlighting an evolving conversation around regional autonomy and balanced development in South Korea.
