About potential flood threats and risks – interactive maps
An interactive tool has been developed to showcase the threats of flooding due to snowmelt and rainfall in Lithuania, providing risk assessments for residents and economic activities.
The Lithuanian Environmental Protection Agency has created an interactive tool that includes maps showing the likelihood of flooding due to snowmelt and rainfall in various coastal areas. This project, which has been ongoing since 2020, compiled data from the public and relevant institutions regarding changes in terrain in flood-prone areas, alongside recent research and climate change trends. This comprehensive analysis provides critical information on potential flood risks.
The updated flood threat maps are valuable not only for residents but also for businesses, helping them to prepare for possible environmental contamination resulting from flooding. These maps will play a crucial role in developing risk management plans and measures aimed at reducing flood hazards, as well as informing spatial planning documents, enabling local governments and institutions to manage flood risks more effectively in vulnerable regions.
Increasing incidents of flooding have a significant negative impact on environmental contamination, as floodwaters can inundate polluted areas, industrial zones, and densely populated urban locations. This initiative represents a proactive approach to mitigating the adverse effects of flooding, especially in light of ongoing climate change, and underscores the importance of adaptation strategies to protect both the environment and local economies from future flood risks.
