Former drivers of Ušakov are sentenced to prison for fictitious "employment" at "Rīgas satiksme"

Two former drivers of Ušakov have been sentenced to prison for extensive fraud involving the public enterprise "Rīgas satiksme".

Andris Saulītis and Juris Kukulis, former drivers for the publicly-owned transport company "Rīgas satiksme," were found guilty of large-scale fraud, leading to prison sentences of four and two and a half years, respectively. Ingvars Šnikvalds, the former technical support director of the company, has received a five-year probation sentence for aiding in their fraudulent activities. Collectively, the trio is also required to return approximately 247,000 euros that they fraudulently obtained from the company.

The case emerged from a larger investigation into fictitious employment within the Riga City Council, which had seen significant scrutiny. Saulītis' fraudulent activities began years before the "Saskaņa" and "Gods kalpot Rīgai" coalition, under Ušakov's leadership, took over the council. Under an agreement with a now-deceased employee, Saulītis secured a position as a locksmith while contributing no actual labor, highlighting potential gaps in oversight within the city government.

This case carries implications not only for the individuals involved but also raises questions about the management and integrity of public services in Latvia. The judgments reflect a growing trend towards accountability within public institutions and demonstrate the authorities' commitment to addressing corruption that undermines public trust and resource allocation in municipal governance.
