A recent ruling by the Riga city court sentenced two individuals to both real and conditional imprisonment for their involvement in fraudulent activities concerning the European Union's agricultural funds. The case highlighted the misappropriation of funds associated with a project aimed at the reclamation and reconstruction of agricultural land, financed by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD) and managed by the Rural Support Service.

The European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO) revealed that the fraud was orchestrated through collusion between the project recipient and another entrepreneur, enabling the manipulation of a public procurement procedure. This illegal arrangement ensured that the contract was awarded to a pre-selected company, undermining the integrity of the procurement process and violating applicable procurement regulations. Furthermore, despite the contract being awarded to this company, the actual work was not performed by them but rather by the project recipient using their own resources.

The court's verdict noted substantial financial losses to the EU budget, amounting to €95,803, directly tied to this fraud scheme. The guilty verdict imposed on the defendants underlines the commitment of authorities to uphold accountability in the management of EU funds and signals a strong stance against corruption, which can have far-reaching consequences on public trust and financial governance within the European Union.
