SL on the bribery scandal: 'We need to look at whether our routines have failed'

The Stockholm Public Transport Authority (SL) is investigating potential failures in their procedures amid ongoing investigations into a bribery scandal involving multiple suspects.

In early February, allegations emerged implicating several individuals in a bribery scandal related to the traffic administration in Region Stockholm. Two individuals have been detained on probable cause for serious bribery offenses—one for receiving bribes and the other for offering bribes. Among those involved is an entrepreneur who is believed to have disbursed funds to secure subcontracting work for a company that has a contract with SL.

Additionally, three other individuals are suspected in connection with the case, including one current employee of the traffic administration and another who used to work there, along with a relative of one of the detained individuals. The ongoing investigation raises concerns about possible inadequacies in SL's internal procedures, suggesting that the scope for approving significant financial amounts may have been mismanaged, allowing inappropriate individuals to make certain decisions, which could have facilitated the corrupt activities.

The management at SL is responding to these concerns and is indicating they must review their operational protocols to prevent future occurrences of such misconduct. The situation highlights the critical need for transparent and robust internal controls, especially when dealing with public funds, as the scandal was initially uncovered by the Tax Authority, underscoring the importance of oversight in public sector operations.
