A court in Rondônia has upheld a ruling that mandates the Department of Roads of the State of Rondônia (DER-RO) to compensate the family of an employee who tragically died after being run over by a steamroller while working at a construction site in January 2022. The incident was captured on security cameras showing the equipment reversing at the time of the accident. Following the legal proceedings, the court decided during an electronic session held from February 2 to 6, 2026, confirming the Department's liability.
The ruling dictates that DER-RO must provide financial compensation in two forms. Firstly, a pension that amounts to two-thirds of the victim's salary will be paid to the family. Secondly, the court increased the amount for moral damages from R$ 75,000 to R$ 150,000, a decision made by the 2nd Special Chamber. This compensation is intended for the victim's children and mother, who will receive equal shares of the award. Furthermore, the pension will be available to the children until they reach 25 years of age, ensuring ongoing financial support for the victims' dependents.
